Movies on the Holocaust

Life is Beautiful (1997) 美麗人生

We are wrapping up the Jewish Holocaust section of our Genocide Unit. I wish I had time to show my students just one of these movies. I am hoping they can read the book or watch online during their weekend, although they tell me they don't have time. Fortunately, one of their homeroom teachers told me she would share this blog post with their parents and show one of the films in their class after their big test.

Wrinkle In Time時間的皺摺

Ab honesto virum bonum nihil deterret. Nothing deters a good man from doing what is honorable. (Seneca)

It seemed like our elementary school showed it (read it?) in class every Easter.
Many of the same themes, like defeating Darkness (through the leadership and
inspiration of great figures like Jesus) is similar to Easter.
The author herself was a liberal Christian and
official writer in residence in NYC's Episcopal Cathedral of St. John.
The similar themes of Goodness defeating
Evil through the Light, comes from the book of John.

Fun fact, this book has been one of the most banned books of all time
because of its Universalist message, which conservatives thought were un-Christian.
Fight the censorship of free thought.

You can read it online for free via OverDrive, Google Books, as an Epub or

The reading level for a native speaker is 9-12 years old and for a ESL intermediate level student.
The movie is coming out in Taiwan in a couple of days, but I really hope this inspires my students
to read the book, the way it did for me.

Book Vocabulary Words (Quizlet)

Pre-Reading Brainstorm:

  • Have you ever felt "different" from everyone else?
  • Genres體裁: What is the difference between fantasy魔幻故事;奇幻文學 and science fiction科幻小說?
  • What are the science concepts of Einstein's theory of relativity相對論 and Quantum Physics量子物理學?
  • What is a Tesseract四維超正方體?

Loki洛基 holds a Tesseract, a 4 dimensional cube

Book Summary:
A Wrinkle in Time is the first in a series of four book that follow the adventures of Meg Murry and Calvin O'Keefe.
The science fantasy novel begins with Meg's personal struggles at school and her inability to fit in with the crowd.
This is also a problem for her younger brother Charles Wallace. Everyone thinks he is dumb, though both children
are intelligent. Charles Wallace could easily be a genius. He can also read the minds of others.
Charles Wallace befriends a strange group of  neighbors - Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which.
These three ladies take the children on a strange journey, promising to help them find and rescue their
father who has been missing for two years. They travel to three planets by wrinkling space and time.
The first planet is Uriel.
On Uriel, the children see the Dark Thing, a massive blackness that threatens to overtake the universe
and that is threatening Earth. It is only through the work of great people such as Jesus, Buddha and
Gandhi, as well as other great artists and scientists, that keeps the Dark Thing from swallowing the earth.
The ladies tell the children that this is what their father is fighting.
They travel to another planet called Camazotz, which is already overtaken by the Dark Thing.
On Camazotz, everyone acts exactly like everyone else and all creativity has been erased from
the planet. The children meet the Man with the Red Eyes who tries to "hypnotize" them into
following IT. Charles Wallace eventually gives in with the hope of defeating the Dark Force,
but he is taken in by the powerful evil.
On the third planet, Meg finds the meaning of true love to save her brother Charles Wallace.
Does Meg rescue her father and defeat “IT”? Read the book to find out!

Literature in the ESL Classroom

Grammar can be boring, so I like to take literature breaks using some of the English learning magazines (A+ English and  ABC) my school provides. It's an opportunity to teach literature lessons on plot, character development, the importance of setting and famous authors. Students can expand their English world by being familiar with famous stories and writers.

I put the lessons into a ppt, with some videos. I like to supplement what the magazine provides, with a bit of writing practice, video and critical thinking. Some of the lessons I have taught this year:

Unit 7: Genocide

Learning Questions:
What is genocide? the murder of a whole group of people, especially whole nation, race, or religious group(尤指對整個民族、種族或宗教團體的)大屠殺,種族滅絶
victims of genocide 種族大屠殺的受害者
Why should we study genocide? Who was responsible? Are you responsible if you do not try to stop things like this? Why do people treat other human beings in ways like these?" Why after the Holocaust “never again” have genocides continued to happen?

There are seven readings some of which are divided by English proficiency. I tried to go in chronological order. (ppt, handouts)

(Quiz 1) Introduction and Armenia Vocabulary

Reading 2: Auschwitz (A class/ B Class)

Reading 3: Remembrance Day

January 27 is the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It is the day on which the world remembers one of the greatest tragedies in human history, the Nazi Holocaust in Germany during World War II. The United Nations created this day in a special Resolution in 2005. Members of the UN General Assembly wanted a day in memory of the 6 million European Jews who perished in the Nazi concentration camps. The day is also to make future generations aware of the horrors of what happened in the camps in the hope that this will prevent future acts of genocide. January 27 is the date in 1945 when the Russian Army liberated the largest such camp, Auschwitz.

The United Nations holds a week of events that ends on January 27. These include exhibitions on the Holocaust in its New York headquarters, the launch of special websites, concerts and videoed messages from world leaders and Holocaust survivors. In 2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon gave the following speech: “We must go beyond remembrance, and make sure that new generations know this history. We must apply the lessons of the Holocaust to today’s world. And we must do our utmost so that all peoples must enjoy the protections and rights for which the United Nations stands.” Special events also take place at Holocaust museums in the USA and Israel.

Reading 4: Cambodia Killing Fields (A Class/ B Class)

Reading 5: Balkan Wars: Radovan Karadzic captured in Serbia

Serbian security forces have captured Radovan Karadzic, the international fugitive who had been on the run for almost 13 years. Karadzic was on Interpol’s most wanted list for masterminding ethnic cleansing during the Balkan Wars of the 1990s. He is accused of organizing the genocide in the town of Srebrenica when 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were massacred by Serbian troops. A representative from Serbian President Boris Tadic said: "Karadzic was brought to the investigative judge of the War Crimes Court in Belgrade, in accordance with the law on cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia." Thousands of Bosnian Muslims celebrated in the streets on Monday night at the news of Karadzic’s arrest.

The United States and the European Union congratulated Serbia’s government on the capture of Karadzic. The association representing the mothers of those killed in Srebrenica also added their praise and thanks. One mother said: "I hope that people who had to keep quiet because of Karadzic will start revealing the locations of mass graves and let us find the truth about our loved ones". UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also welcomed the news, saying it was "a historic moment for the victims" of the atrocities. He said justice would not be fully done until Karadzic’s sidekick Ratko Mladic had also been caught. "While this is an important milestone, the work of the International Tribunal will not be complete until all fugitives have been arrested and tried," he said.

Reading 6: Rwanda

Students from the Lorene Rogers Middle School have been campaigning on Twitter since April 6th for people to remember the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Their “teensMAD4Rwanda” project aimed to generate a million Twitter messages (tweets) in 100 days - ‘MAD’ means ‘making a difference’. They won advertising space in the 'USA Today' newspaper for their efforts. Teacher Tara Gipson said their hope was “to stop the violence from occurring again through understanding and education”

The class had dinner with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and met many survivors of the Rwandan genocide. Up to a million people lost their lives in the horror. This was about 20 per cent of the population. The killing happened because of tensions between two ethnic groups in Rwanda – the Hutus and Tutsis. The Hutus believed the Tutsis wanted to enslave them so they called for the killing of all Tutsis. The world looked on at the bloodbath for three months and did nothing. The Texas students’ million tweets represent the million deaths.

What does Globalization mean?

What is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is a worldwide movement. Over a million small-scale producers and workers in 500 certified producer groups in 60 countries are actively involved in this system. Their products are sold in thousands of “world shops”, Fair Trade shops and supermarkets, and online.

Fair Trade unites producers in developing countries with millions of consumers in developed countries. These goods often carry an information label that explains how they benefit poor people. This helps to raise awareness about the conditions under which many people in developing countries live. By buying Fair Trade products, people show that they want fair globalization. Consumers have the power to demand trade justice. Trade justice means a fair international trading system, based on rules that ensure that everybody benefits.

No matter how hard poorer people in developing countries may work, trade rules often  benefit the rich world most. The result is exploitation for hundreds of millions of people. Trade justice is about changing the rules that keep people in poverty.

Reading 2: End Debt Crisis, Case Study: S. Korea
(A, B)
Vocabulary: (A/ B)

Reading 3: Universal Basic Income, Case Study: Finland

Universal Basic Income: A Utopian Idea Whose Time May Finally Have Arrived

Universal basic income (UBI), is simple enough: the government would pay every adult citizen a salary, regardless if they worked or not. Doing so, might solve many endemic economic problems, from poverty to chronic joblessness, which will only get worse in the near future.

Martin Luther King Jr. endorsed the idea, as did conservative economists Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek.  Today, thinkers on the left see the UBI as a way to fight poverty and inequality. To the right, the idea is a simple alternative to a bloated social-welfare system.

Critics come from all sides too: they say the UBI is just a decoy to starve government help that boosts universal child care or free college tuition. Or it’s one more bad program bound to make workers lazy, making a large numbers of people dependent on the government.

Finland became the first European country to pay unemployed citizens an unconditional monthly wage. The two-year national pilot program, gives 2,000 unemployed Finns ages 25 to 58 a guaranteed €560 (around $590), money that would keep coming even if they find work. The test is intended to alleviate poverty and reduce unemployment.

The Finns aren’t alone: similar experiments are moving forward in Canada, the Netherlands and Italy. The Indian government is also thinking about having a small UBI as a strategy to cut the country’s most extreme poverty.

Tapping 輕拍 for the Classroom

I recently discovered EFT Emotional Freedom Technique (tapping therapy) and have introduced it to my daughter to deal with her stress at school. Stressed out people stress out each other. Since starting tapping, even after a few rounds, I feel an immediate calming effect.

Tapping began about 26 years ago and has been used in the States by war veterans to deal with PTSD創傷後壓力症候群 and later by students after mass school shootings. Now it is becoming more mainstream, being used in American classrooms and advocated by principals for their staff and student body, as well as becoming more popular globally. (Taiwan is actually having an upcoming certification course at Changhua Normal University in February)

                                                                                       How to Tap Video

How to do:
First, you need to identify the painful issue or situation. Then you say the setup statement 3x. You honestly recall the stressful situation or anxiety and say it aloud or in your mind as you tap 9 acupressure points. (Karate chop on the hand, bone around eye,  above your lip, under your lip, collarbone, side body, grown of head).

Each time you do, it gives voice to fact that you are feeling this  and while tapping these areas it helps the brain secret calming hormones to the point that these same thoughts lose their intensity of stress. For example, "Even though I feel anxiety about school, I accept myself." Keep tapping on those points while you vent. Eventually, you can have these thoughts without the physical tension.

You can also say aloud a positive affirmation, "I am likable, I accept myself" or "I am surrounded by Love"  or anything that aligns with your personal spiritual beliefs while tapping.

EFT is a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western psychology (Dr. Gary Craig,1991 and TFT's Dr. Callahan)

Benefits:

  • Reduce short-term and chronic stress壓力管理, short-term depression憂鬱症 and anxiety焦慮症
  • Lowers cortisol 可體松 (stress hormone that inflames the body)
  • Reduce joint pain
  • Reduces bullying傷害 in schools
  • Clears or reduces childhood trauma (ie. from bullying, abuse)
  • Decrease fatigue 疲憊
  • Decrease tension headaches
  • Improve focus and ability to pay attention, ADHD 注意力不足過動症
  • Improves grades and job performance
  • Drug free therapy
  • Improve Sleep
  • Improve athletic coordination技術, 協調性 and performance
  • Changes the classroom, office space, home, into a positive environment if all or most of the members participate regularly
  • Improves adult bonding/couple relationship problems

For the ESL classroom, I think its important for the kids to do it in Chinese; they can whisper anything they want to themselves. I will try this with my more advanced/mature students with a general anxiety, like before an exam, and see how it goes.
