Newton's First Law of Motion

Salamander's science text book talks about motion, position, friction, but nothing about Newton. So I thought I could introduce Newton and his three laws of Motion and just focus on the first  Law of Inertia, by doing a fun "Turkey Egg Experiment.

I show them a short video on Intertia.

What is Physics? The science of how and why things ________.

Newton was a _____________ who lived from _____ to _______.

He discovered ______ laws of motion.

The first law is called the Law of _______.
The first law of motion says: 'Things want to keep on doing what they are already doing'. If things are at ______, they want to stay at rest, if things are ________ they want to stay moving.
 Or
All the things in this world are lazy, they want to remain in the state where they are unless some outside _____ is applied upon them. This laziness is called inertia.
                                        Or
Things want to stay what they are already doing. They don’t want to move. This is called _________.

WORD BOX:

Inertia     1642    scientist      1727     move      three    force   rest      moving          Inertia

Turkey Egg Drop Experiment
Get the egg into the water.
Materials:

Egg, cardboard tube, water, drinking cups, tray, pie pans
Experiment:

1.    Fill the cups with ¾ full with __________.
2.   Center a _______  ________ on top of the  cup.
3.   Place the cardboard __________ on the pie plate, positioning it directly ________ the water.
4.    Now ________ the edge of the pie pan horizontally. Don’t swing up or down!

Thinking:

What did you think of the experiment? How does this show motion?
Answer: The egg it wants to do what its doing - not move. You made enough force to the pie pan to cause it to zip out from under the cardboard tube (there’s not much friction against the drinking glass). The edge of the pie pan hooked the bottom of the tube, which then flew off with the pan. You knocked the support out from under the egg. For a small nanosecond the egg didn’t move because it was already not moving. But the force of gravity took over and pulled the egg straight down toward the center of the Earth.

Also, according to Mr. Newton’s First Law, once the egg was moving, it didn’t want to stop. The gravity-pushed egg caused the water to splash out. Did someone get wet?

READING:
On its anniversary on Oct. 31, “Taiwan’s invisible champion” Super Alloy International (SAI) gathered 25 super sports cars and luxury cars from Chrysler and other makers worth more than NT$600 million at its offices. The row of cars attracted a lot of attention as they were parked and showed off by the side of the road, causing many passers-by to get out of their cars and take pictures.
It is perhaps not common knowledge, but Lamborghini wheels are made in Taiwan. Using titanium and mechanical technologies, SAI has expanded from making golf club heads and bicycle parts to become a supplier to Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren, Jaguar, Chrysler, Ford and Toyota, reaching an annual turnover of more than NT$4 billion.

II.         READING: New York Changes its Speed Limit

Drivers in New York have to drive more slowly. There is a new speed limit of 40 kph. The city wants people to drive more carefully. It wants fewer accidents and deaths. The mayor wants to improve traffic safety to protect children and old people. Some people say the new limit will increase accidents.
Most countries have speed limits. The first speed limit was 16 kph. This was in the UK in 1861. The world's highest limit is 140 kph. Some roads have no speed limit, like Germany's Autobahns. The WHO said 1.24 million people die every year in traffic accidents. Speed limits could make this number smaller.

Buck Rogers and Jet-Packs: A Vision of the Future

What did writers of the past predict about the future? What do we have today that writers did not imagine? What did past writers imagine that we still don't have today? These were our pre-reading questions.

My grade 8A class is starting a new unit about jet-packs and the reading includes an ode to Buck Rogers, the comic book hero of the 1920s. If the students are very good this week, I will show them some "old school" vidoes of the TV show I watched when I was a kid. I tried to explain to them the slang adjective "cheesy", or cliche. I think they will get what cheesy means after a minute of watching Buck Rogers. I doubt they will appreciate it as much as I do.

(Disco Dance Scene, doesn't start til a minute into this clip

The reading described two jet-packs on the market today, the Martin Jetpack and the Jetlev Flyer., both expensive and not very efficient.

Christmas Carols for Singing Class

My singing class is the 7th grade's most basic of English classes. I want them to at least be exposed to some basic carols as well as some modern Christmas song , as the English in pop songs are more simple than old English traditional carols.

First things first is the kids need to know all about the Christmas story -the Nativity. I found some videos on YouTube in English  with Mandarin subtitles:

"Jesus is Born" with Chinese subtitles

Obviously, because of their level, I'll only expect them to sing a stanza or the Chorus of any song. They need to know some basic Christmas vocabulary and perhaps one or two students could learn some intermediate level vocabulary.

(12 Min video on Christmas Vocab for Intermediate)

(short video of Christmas flashcards basic level)

The first carol I will teach will be "Go Tell It on the Mountain" (Mandarin/ English),
Vocabulary: mountain, shepherds, heavens, hills, everywhere, born, tell, silent

They will need to know the first stanza which includes the chorus.

Go Tell it On the Mountain

While shepherds kept their watching
Over silent flocks by night,
Behold throughout the heavens,
There shone a holy light:
Go, Tell It On The Mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go, Tell It On The Mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.

The shepherds feared and trembled
When lo! above the earth
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Savior’s birth:
Go, Tell It On The Mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go, Tell It On The Mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.

Down in a lowly manger
Our humble Christ was born
And God send us salvation,
That blessed Christmas morn:
Go, Tell It On The Mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go, Tell It On The Mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.

When I am a seeker,
I seek both night and day;
I seek the Lord to help me,
And He shows me the way:
Go, Tell It On The Mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go, Tell It On The Mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.

He made me a watchman
Upon the city wall,
And if I am a Christian,
I am the least of all.
Go, Tell It On The Mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go, Tell It On The Mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.

  到各山嶺去傳揚,越過山崗到各地方;

牧羊人心裏戰兢,但聞天使歌聲,歡呼讚美聲嘹亮,救主今夜降生。到各山嶺去傳揚,越過山崗到各地方;

到各山嶺去傳揚,越過山崗到各地方;

The next traditional carol I will teach will be "Silent Night". Here is a Chinese version.

Silent Night

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild

Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heav'nly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

Here is Oh Holy Night in Mandarin and with English lyrics.
Here is also Hark the Angels  Sing in Mandarin and with English lyrics.

A song that teaches the Christmas story in modern English is  Mary's Boy Child.

Mary’s Boy Child

Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you.
Mary did you know that your baby boy would give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when your kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.
Oh Mary did you know?
The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb---.
Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding is the great--I--- AM---.

An easy modern song for the G7 Singing class is Jingle Bell Pop by IM5. Thanks to my coworker Teacher Mia for her translation:

"Jingle Bell Pop"-IM5鈴聲舞曲  IM5
Vocabulary: jolly, galore, parking, mood, tune, jam, wonderland, silent, merry, stocking, Christmas Day, fireplace, cheer, jingle bell, Santa, reindeer, chimney, rooftop

It’s that time of the year, yeah, that time of the year
When everybody’s feeling very merry
All the girls and the boys got stockings loaded with toys
But that don’t make me happy

Ooh woah oh, get me in the mood
Yeahhh, play my favorite tune
It would make my Christmas Day
So gather ‘round the fireplace

And light up the night with lights everywhere
We’re spreading all that good old holiday cheer
So, please don’t let the good times stop
Play that jingle bell
Play that jingle bell pop

Every house on the street is all red and green
Santa will come sliding down the chimney
Can’t you hear reindeer on the rooftop?
Don’t let the good times stop
Play that jingle bell pop

Ooh woah oh, Yeahhh
Ooh woah oh, Come on play that jingle bell pop
It’s that time of the year
That time of the year
Where everybody’s feeling holly jolly
They are led to the stores
With wishes galore
My only wish is that we find some parking

Ooh woah oh, get me the mood
Yeahhh, play my favorite tune
If you hear that winter jam
I’ll be in winter wonderland

(Chorus)

I don’t want this night to be silent, silent
Come on play that jingle bell pop x 4

(Chorus)
Ooh woah oh, Yeahhh
Ooh woah oh, play that jingle bell pop
Ooh woah oh, Yeahhh
Don’t let the good times stop
