Spreading fear of bedbugs alters daily lives of Koreans

 KEY WORDS (Quizlet)

■ commute 통근하다
■ bedbug 빈대
■ fabric 직물, 천
■ bite (곤충 등이) 물다
■ surge 급증, 급등
■ parasitic 기생하는
■ larvae 유충
■ file 제기[제출]하다
■ infestation 들끓음, 만연

Kim Sang-hee, 32, who commutes to and from work by subway in Seoul, does not sit during her rides these days even when there is an empty seat, because of fears of bedbugs that have been spreading nationwide recently.

She is particularly concerned as she takes Seoul subway Line No. 1 to go to her office near Jonggak Station, which is the oldest section of the Seoul subway system.

"Trains on Line No. 1 are mostly old, and many of them have seats made of fabric that could become a good home for bedbugs," Kim said on Tuesday. "I am worried that I could be bitten by bedbugs before I know it."

Korea has recently seen a surge in bedbug sightings and damage nationwide since Keimyung University, located in Daegu, reported in September that some of its students were bitten by the parasitic insects in their dormitory.

Other related cases have since been reported across the country, including the Seoul metropolitan area. There were media reports of bedbugs and larvae found under floor mats at a public sauna in Incheon in October.

In Seoul alone, nearly 20 reports of suspected bedbug sightings have been filed so far, raising concerns of a possible infestation in the densely populated capital of 9.4 million people.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow for ESL

"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is an 1820 short story by American author Washington Irving. Even though the story is 200 years old, Americans still enjoy telling this story, and there have been popular movies retelling it.

Not only is the story hilarious, but it teaches the concept of ambiguity. Irving leaves it up to the reader to decide what truly happened to Ichabod Crane. Just like a good ghost story, it's up to the hearer to decide what is true and what is not.

Grade Level 5: Fluent Reader

The protagonist of the story, Ichabod Crane, is a Yankee schoolteacher who lives in Sleepy Hollow, a Dutch enclave on the Hudson River. A suggestible man, Crane believes the ghost stories and tales of witchcraft he has heard and read. He is particularly impressed by the tale of a spectral headless horseman said to haunt the area. Crane is also a mercenary; he courts Katrina Van Tassel mostly because she is the daughter of a rich farmer and is expected to receive a large inheritance. Abraham Van Brunt (also called Brom Bones) is Crane’s jealous rival, a local favorite, and a rash horseman who often plays tricks on the schoolmaster. Late one night as Ichabod Crane rides home from a party at Katrina’s home, he is suddenly frightened by a ghostlike headless horseman. The ghost pursues him and hurls at him a round object that he takes to be a head but is later revealed to have been a pumpkin. The schoolmaster is never seen in Sleepy Hollow again.

Canterbury Tales for ESL (Intermediate/Adv)

The Canterbury Tales is a story about storytelling. The work is a collection of stories told by a group of pilgrims on their way to the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury. The tales are written in Middle English and are a diverse group of stories that range from serious moral tales to more bawdy stories.

Reading level: Young adult, grade 10-12 English as a first language.

Language: Middle English, although there are modern translations with Chaucer's English next to modern translations.

The Tales are divided into 12 chapters with 31 pilgrims, telling 24 stories.

Chaucer's most common verse rhyme scheme in the Canterbury Tales, the rhyming couplet, would be described as "aa, bb, cc, dd" because it rarely repeats a rhyme due to the pressures on the poet to keep the narrative moving.

The Canterbury Tales is important for a number of reasons: It is widely considered to be the first major work of English literature. It's one of the first examples of the use of the vernacular in literature, as it was written in the language of the common people, rather than in Latin.  It gives a critical picture of medieval English society and shows different classes of people.

Moral Tales: The Tales of the Prioress, Clerk, Monk, Man of Law, Second Nun, and Parson, and Chaucer's Tale of Melibee

Essential Questions:
  1. How does physiognomy play a role in helping to create caricatures of the pilgrims?
  2. How are the pilgrims still relevant to society today?
  3. How are social classes distorted throughout The Tales?
  4. How do cultural values influence the kinds of journeys people take?

The Prologue: Provides a general description of the characters on the journey.

Literary Devices used: simile and metaphors, irony, allusion, symbolism, imagery, satire,

Symbols: flowers (youth, fertility, sexual desire)

Themes: religion, class, deceit, the role of women in medieval society (wife of Bath's Tale)

The Wife of Bath's Tale:  This is one of Chaucer's most developed characters.

The story explores the double standard applied to medieval society. What do women really want? sovereignty of course! Women desire power in marriage, and when she does have the power, both parties are happier.  Using the Hag/Crone (wise woman) archetype the Hag gives the knight a choice.

The Wife of Bath represents feminism and the belief that women should be given power and control. She also represents the idea that women do not need to conform to the norms of the time and can enjoy their own sexuality. The Wife of Bath begins the Prologue to her tale by establishing herself as an authority on marriage, due to her extensive personal experience with the institution. Since her first marriage at the tender age of twelve, she has had five husbands.

One evening, out of frustration, the Wife tears three pages out of the book and punches Jankyn in the face. Jankyn repays her by striking her on the head, which is the reason, she explains in line 636, that she is now deaf in one ear.

Basic Mandarin for English Speakers

Keep in mind there are two different kinds of Chinese writing systems- Traditional characters (Taiwan, HK, Macau) and Simplified (Mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore).  However, if you travel to Japan or S. Korea, the old temples will have traditional characters. To decide which kind of Mandarin to learn read this article. Learners often use pinyin, which is the phonetic sound using the Latin alphabet.

Mandarin is a tonal language. You will have to learn the 5 tones when you are learning Mandarin. The tones are flat, rising, dip, falling, and neutral. They are represented in pinyin, resembling accent lines, but in fact they are showing the tones.

Schools will retain records of violence for extended period after offenders graduate

By Lee Hae-rin

Students with records of committing school bullying will face penalties in the university admissions process, while victims' consent will become mandatory in order to clear records of perpetrators' crimes, the government announced, Wednesday.

Victims will also be better protected and receive more support when recovering with the help of school violence prevention and support centers, which will consist of school police officers, legal experts and psychological counselors.

The government held a meeting with the school violence prevention committee, which is presided over by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, Wednesday, and passed a set of comprehensive plans to tackle bullying.

The measures come as prosecutor-turned-lawyer Chung Sun-sin, who was named the new chief of the National Office of Investigation stepped down a day after his appointment on Feb. 24. Chung was attacked by controversial reports that stated that his son, currently attending Seoul National University, bullied his peers in high school in 2017.

The Netflix hit series "The Glory" also raised public consensus on enforced punishment of school violence perpetrators.

According to the new measures, schools will retain the records of school bullies for an extended period of four years after offenders graduate, allowing universities to take bullying records into account during the admissions process, starting next year.

Since February, the education ministry has required all schools to retain bullying records for two years after perpetrators graduate in order to enhance safety in classrooms. In the past, the bullying records of students could be removed after graduation.

Previously, universities only took school bullying records into account for rolling admissions, which assess students based on records and grades. However, it's weighting on the test-based regular admission system was criticized for being insignificant.

Abnormally early cherry blossoms move up spring flower festivals

■ take place 개최되다
■ duration 지속 기간

■ abnormal 비정상적인

The unexpectedly early blooming of spring flowers in Korea this year has left local governments scrambling to host their flower festivals earlier than usual to prevent the long-awaited mask-free spring events from ending up flower-free.

According to the Korea Metrological Administration (KMA), cherry blossoms in Seoul started blooming on March 25 this year, which is 14 days earlier than average, coming around April 8. It is also the second-earliest blooming date recorded since the KMA started making meteorological observations in 1922.

Flowers in the southeastern regions of Daegu and North and South Gyeongsang provinces also bloomed about eight days earlier than usual. In the southeastern port city of Pohang, cherry blossoms bloomed on March 16, while Daegu and Andong bloomed on March 21 and 23, respectively.

Due to the unexpected early blooming of cherry blossoms, regional spring flower festivals in North Gyeongsang Province's Uiseong and Andong, and Gangwon Province's Namdaecheon kicked off last week, which is around a week ahead of their usual annual schedules.

In Seoul and around the capital area, several flower-viewing venues with cherry blossom trees were already crowded with springtime picnickers before the festivals kicked off over the weekend.

Over 1.1 million people visited Yeouido's cherry blossom road, Yoonjung-ro, last weekend, according to Seoul's Yeongdeungpo District Office. In response, the district office moved up the traffic control originally planned for the Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival, set to take place between April 4 and 9.

In the city's northeastern Seongdong District, around 220,000 people visited Seoul Forest. In response, Seongdong District rescheduled the region's two cherry blossom festivals ― held in Songjeong village and Geumho Mountain ― to April 1, a little over a week earlier than the original date of April 9.

The blooming time for flowering trees depends on temperature and duration of sunlight. The average temperature in Seoul during March was 3.9 degrees Celsius higher than last March and the duration of sunlight was 20.5 hours more.

The KMA estimates that the country's spring flower blooming time could be moved forward a further week in advance if greenhouse gas emissions are not cut and abnormally high temperatures continue.
