Actress portrays story of first love in new film '20th Century Girl' 김유정, 새 영화 ‘20세기 소녀'에서 첫사랑 이야기 연기

Kim You-jung is one of those few actors who found fame at a young age and has continued to find success in TV and cinema well into her adult years. However, the star said the process of persevering in the entertainment industry wasn't easy. 김유정은 아역 시절 유명세를 탄 후 성인이 되어서도 TV와 영화에서 계속 성공을 거둔 몇 안 되는 배우 중 한 명이다. 그러나 김유정은 연예계에서 인내하며 견디는 과정이 쉽지 않았다고 전했다.

 

The 23-year-old actress began her career at the age of four, working as a child model for a confectionery brand. She was thrust into the limelight at the age of six, appearing as a child in "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (2005) alongside actors Choi Min-sik and Lee Young-ae. As she moved toward her young adult years, Kim starred in various romance TV series, including JTBC's "Clean with Passion For Now" (2018-2019), SBS' "Backstreet Rookie" (2020) and "Lovers of the Red Sky" (2021), which affirmed her status as an A-lister. 성인 초반기가 되자 김유정은 JTBC의 ‘일단 뜨겁게 청소하라(2018-2019)', SBS의 ‘편의점 샛별이(2020)', 그리고 ‘홍천기(2021)'를 포함해 일류 스타로서의 지위를 확실시한 여러 TV 로맨스 드라마에서 주연으로 출연했다.

"Until now, I've never had another career path in mind. But when I turned 20, I was confused and emotionally unstable. I endure that period of time by doing a lot of hobbies and going on solo trips. I think I've grown stronger. In Netflix's film, "20th Century Girl," Kim plays the role of Bo-ra, a 17-year-old girl who decides to play cupid for her best friend, but then gets swept up in a love story of her own. Although the film is mostly set in 1999, the year Kim was born, the actress had no difficulty understanding set pieces of the 1990s and early 2000s, with their retro charm. 넷플릭스 영화 ‘20세기 소녀'에서 김유정은 단짝 친구의 큐피드 역할을 하려다 자신이 첫사랑 이야기에 휩쓸리게 되는 17살 소녀 보라를 연기한다. 이 영화는 대체로 김유정이 태어났던 해인 1999년을 배경으로 하지만 김유정은 1990년대와 2000년대 초반의 복고적 감성을 이해하는데 어려움이 없었다.

"I collect vintage vinyl records and listen to'80s and '90s music. My favorite singers are ballad singers Park Hey-kyoung, Park Ki-young and Yangpa (who were famous in the late 1990s to early 2000s). Although some of the set pieces, like a floppy disk and a beeper, were unfamiliar to me, I was aware of the existence of many of the retro items," she said. 김유정은 "비디오 테이프를 모으고 80년대와 90년대 음악을 듣는다. 가장 좋아하는 가수는 (1990년대 후반과 2000년대 초반에 유명했던) 발라드 가수 박혜경, 박기영과 양파다. 플로피 디스크와 삐삐와 같은 일부 세트 소품은 낯설었지만 많은 복고 물품들의 존재를 알고 있었다"고 덧붙였다.

Although the central theme of the film is about a teenage girl's first love and its lasting impact, it also deals with navigating friendship and adolescence. 영화의 중심 주제는 10대 소녀의 첫사랑과 (첫사랑의) 끈질긴 영향력에 대한 것이지만, 동시에 우정과 청소년기를 헤쳐가는 과정도 다룬다.

"If I were in Bo-ra's position, I, too, would choose friendship over love," she said.

김유정은 "내가 보라였다면, 나 역시 사랑보단 우정을 택했을 것"이라고 말했다
