a monument (July 4, 1837) commemorating the battle of Lexington and Concord.

However, since the cornerstone of the monument was laid late in 1836 and the

monument carries the date 1836, some printed versions of the poem give that date.

The poem was not printed again until it was included in Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Poems (1847).

Mental Health Issues: Has the World Gone Mad?

After Midterms, for our second 9th-grade unit, we will focus on mental health issues. I hope to talk freely, using readings based on scientific research so I can help remove any stigmas the students might have. I won't be covering eating disorders again, as we just finished talking about them during the "Body Image" section of our Garment Industry.

1. Why is studying mental health important?

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 300 million people worldwide have depression and 50 million have dementia. Schizophrenia is estimated to affect 23 million people, and bipolar disorder around 60 million. A grim report recently published (October 2018) by 28 global specialists in psychiatry, public health and neuroscience warned that the world is experiencing a global mental health care crisis. The current approach by governments, if they don’t address this crisis will be devastating effects on individuals, communities, the global economy and human rights. Experts estimate it could cost the global economy up to $16 trillion between 2010 and 2030 if a collective failure to respond is not addressed. One of the reasons for the “world going mad” are global aging societies (dementia and alzheimers). Another reason, is inadequate care and outdated stigmas, that has led to mass human rights violations globally. It’s time to face our own stigmas and biases and use science and education to find solutions for a better future for everyone.

The Garment Industry Group Project

We are finally finishing up our 9th grade Social Studies unit on the garment industry. Currently, we are reading about solutions, specifically Adidas' shoe made from recycled plastic found in the ocean. I showed them the Dutch company making shoes from recycled chewing gum and hope they can be inspired to think outside the box for their project.

The group project is a culmination of everything they learned in this unit. They need to recall just one (of many) problems we studied in the garment industry, be it's social or environmental impact, and create a solution. I am asking in the form of a product or an invention because they need to design an advertisement for their idea and sell it to their classmates. They really have to think about their advertisement and use some of the methods we talked about, as well as use new vocabulary. They will present their idea and ad to their peers.

2.  Anne Bradstreet- first American poet and a Puritan

Bradstreet often used a sarcastic tone in her poetry. In the first stanza of "The Prologue" she claims "for my mean pen are too superior things" referring to society's belief that she is unfit to write about wars and the founding of cities because she is a woman. In stanza five Bradstreet continues to display irony by stating "who says my hand a needle better fits". This is another example of her sarcastic voice because society during this time expected women to perform household chores rather than write poetry.

Although Anne Bradstreet endured many hardships in her life, her poems are usually written in a hopeful and positive tone. Throughout her poem In "Memory of My Dear Grandchild Simon Bradstreet," she mentions that even though she has lost her grandson in this world, she will one day be reunited with him in Heaven.] In "Upon the Burning of Our House," Bradstreet describes her house in flames but selflessly declares "there's wealth enough, I need no more." Although Bradstreet lost many of her material items she kept a positive attitude and remained strong through God.

Poetic devices: rhyme: correspondence of terminal sounds of words or of lines of verse

• hyperbole: exaggeration for emphasis (the opposite of understatement)
• simile: comparison between two essentially unlike things using words such as "like," as," or "as though"
• imagery: word or sequence of words representing a sensory experience
