How do we get electricity?

Goal of this lesson: Identify forms of electricity and their uses

G7 Vocabulary 2 Class

This class is basic English level meeting once a week to review key words of frequency that will be on their state tests. This class is particularly challenging as there are several boys with behavioral problems, and low motivation by everyone. I think they definitively have a fixed mindset about their English learning abilities and think they are more motivated by a non traditional academic setting.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am making time to teach Thanksgiving to all my classes, because it’s one of my favorite holidays and because teaching kids to say “thank you” and be grateful is always a good lesson. Also cultivating gratitude makes us more positive and developing optimism in the classroom according to neurologists increasing student motivation and creates better problem solving skills. (See "Cultivating Optimism.")

In my K1 Kindergarten, their English is very basic, so if I can have them saying “thank you” in English, I will be happy. I want to teach them a little chant to the tune of 'Frere Jacque', “I am thankful/I am thankful/ Yes I am/Yes I am/ Thankful for my Mommy/Thankful for my Daddy/And our food/ And our food- all with corresponding body movements of course.

In my Elementary school science class, we recently studied Motion, but they didn’t learn about inertia, so I found this Amazing Turkey Egg Experiment to teach them about intertia. We can even do a dance called ATurkey Names Bert, if we have an extra minute.

For my Elementary Reading classes I will take a day or two this month to teach the kids the basic story of Thanksgiving and the main vocabulary words. I want them to do some kind of simple writing activity that both reinforces proper grammar and gets them thinking about gratitude. 

They will also make a craft, a Thankful Tree. I will also teach them a simple poem/song, sung to the tune of Ode to Joy. I will show them some videos and see what kinds of questions they have.

For my ESL junior high kids I will devote a week to Thanksgiving and have them learn the more difficult vocabulary words and readings. I also want them to do some basic writing exercises that encourages them to think about why being grateful is important. If my highest level class (G8A) can have a conversation on the political aspects of Thanksgiving, the  historical plight of Native Americans, I will be one grateful teacher!

For both my Junior High and Elementary kids I want them to learn how to say thank you in different languages. I will have the elementary kids make a poster called, “A World of Thanks.”

I want to teach the kids how to watch a video, how to listen for information, the main ideas and details and how to take notes.

Halloween Weeks 8-9

Week 9

For my elementary students week 8 is midterms, so we are busy reviewing and testing. Its all serious business. Reality is scary enough. But if by chance we have some time at the end of testing, say just 5 minutes, then I’d like them to get them moving. I love wii Dance, kids love it too. Check out a timeless classic made into a dance, just in time for Halloween. “Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!”

During their oral exam, Grasshopper class illustrated their costumes and watched The Nightmare before Christmas.

I will give them a group reading and do some rhyming of Halloween vocabulary. If we have time we can play some online interactive games with the vocabulary. Here are some links:

For my G7B class we have been studying Genre and Fantasy as an introduction to their unit on JRR Tolkien. I am also giving my G8A a break from their book this week. So I’ve dedicated this week to learning Halloween vocabulary and a lesson on Stephan King.

My Junior High kids are interested in scary movies, and one way to link this to contemporary American literature is introducing them to author Stephen King. Reading any of his stories in English is beyond their level right now, but at least they can be exposed to some of his more famous works through film adaptations.

In one of my Junior High classes, I want to celebrate “Vocabulary day” based on Debra Frasier’s book, “Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary Disaster.” Students choose a word from our massive vocabulary list, and design a creative interpretation of that word for their costume. I think we would only have time to sketch a costume. When thinking of a creative costume, students must be able to define the word in a creative manner. For example, if a student chose the word “miscellaneous,” he can interpret this word into a costume by placing a collection of unrelated objects onto his clothing.
